Types of Dentures

Going without a complete set of teeth can be embarrassing and even painful when oral health problems emerge from tooth decay. If dentures are the right restorative treatment for you, there are a variety of types to choose from. Alex Harris, DDS will evaluate your current dental health and help you select the type of dentures ideal for your smile.

  • Partial Dentures. A partial denture consists of replacement teeth attached to a gum-colored base and restores several missing teeth next to each other. Sometimes, the partial denture is attached to adjacent teeth with framework, and sometimes it is fully removable. If your denture is removable, you will take it out during eating and brushing. This applies for both removable partial and complete dentures.
  • Complete Dentures. A complete denture restores an entire arch of teeth and can be either conventional or immediate. Conventional dentures are placed after the mouth has fully healed following tooth extraction, while immediate dentures are placed the same day the teeth are removed.
  • Overdenture. Although many teeth may be missing or damaged, some teeth may be healthy and worth saving. In these cases, an overdenture fits over the remaining teeth. By allowing these natural teeth to remain in the mouth, your jaw bone receives stimulation to stay healthy and your denture is more secure.
  • Implant-supported Dentures. These are similar to overdentures except that they are for patients who have lost all of their teeth, so they are supported by implants instead. The implants stimulate the jaw bone more than traditional dentures would, but the denture is still removable.
  • Full-Arch Restoration (All-on-4). For this procedure, a fixed denture is attached to as few as four dental implant posts. The prosthesis remains in your mouth at all times and fully restores your ability to eat, smile, and speak. The dental implants provide stimulation to the jaw, preventing bone loss.

If you are interested in implant-based tooth restoration in the future, you can always choose to have dentures in the meantime. This way, your facial features will be preserved and you can still carry on with a complete smile until you are ready for a fixed set of new teeth.

The Process of Getting Traditional Dentures and Partials

The first step to restoring your smile is visiting Vero Dental in Lehi. Alex Harris, DDS will examine your dental health and determine the right treatments for your goals. We will take X-rays of your mouth and prior to performing any surgery, we will discuss your options for anesthesia and sedation.

At this first visit, if it is determined that you will get dentures, we will take digital or physical impressions of your dental arches. Alex Harris, DDS will examine the ways your upper and lower jaw fit together and the overall size of your mouth. This is critical for ensuring properly fitted dentures that do not click when you chew or talk. We use a loose-fitting denture and wax bite molds to predict where the replacement teeth will fit for optimal results.

Alex Harris, DDS will set your new teeth in wax so we can see what the final product will look like. Once the final prosthesis is ready, Alex Harris, DDS will place it in your mouth and make any final adjustments for a perfect fit.

Your dentures may feel strange at first, but the more you wear them, the faster you’ll get used to the way they feel. We may send you home with a denture cleanser to use while your mouth adjusts to your new replacement teeth. If you ever have questions about your dentures, please contact our office and a member of our staff will be happy to assist you.

Implant-Supported Dentures

Traditional dentures, while a very affordable option, come with a number of significant drawbacks. They can rub against the gums and become very uncomfortable, and they cause atrophy in the jaw bones that changes the fit and makes slippage more likely. Implant-supported dentures or partials, by contrast, are still removable but they are much more secure than traditional dentures. They are supported by the jaw bone instead of the gums, making them more stable.

How to Care for Your Dentures

When wearing dentures, it’s important to keep them clean and healthy. Just like natural teeth, dentures must be brushed daily to remove plaque and debris. Twice a day, rinse your dentures first to remove any loose debris. Use a soft toothbrush and non-abrasive cleaner to brush the surface of the denture. We may recommend a special denture cleaner to use.

Then, brush your gums, tongue, and roof of your mouth with hot water. Doing so will prevent infection and bad breath. When you’re not wearing your dentures, keep them in a denture case filled with water. The water will prevent them from warping.

Some patients with traditional dentures benefit from denture adhesives. These come in cream, powder, strips, or liquid form and will help your dentures remain in place while wearing them. You will need to replace your dentures roughly every 5 years due to normal wear. You may need to replace your dentures sooner if you experience pain when biting down, changes in your gums, or if you notice any type of lesions or abnormalities inside the mouth.
